The Baldwin-Whitehall
School District operates more than 80 vehicles (buses
and vans) transporting approximately 5,800 students
to more than 65 educational facilities each day.
There are approximately 130 employees that include
bus and van drivers, bus attendants, mechanics, and
other service staff. The school district bus garage
facility is located off Macek Drive next to the Wallace
Building.
TRANSPORTATION
SCHEDULES
All students
- both public and non-public -
will receive official notification of their transportation
by mail prior to the first day of school. The computer
label will include the following information:
*
School and Grade Level
*
AM Bus Assignment (Bus from home
to school)
*
PM Bus Assignment (Bus from school
to home)
*
Bus Stop Location
*
Approximate Time of Bus Stop in
the AM
The time on
the computer label is the estimated time of the bus
stop on the route. Students should be at the stop approximately
5 to 10 minutes earlier during the first week of school
until routes are adjusted. After the first two weeks
of school, the transportation schedules will become
established but may vary to weather or traffic conditions.
Routes vary
in time depending on the distance that the students
live from the school. Public school routes generally
run 25 to 30 minutes; however, nonpublic routes outside
of the school district may operate nearly one hour.
TRANSPORTATION
HOT LINE
For the convenience
of parents and students, a Transportation Hot Line
is available which can be accessed by calling 412-885-7807.
Calls may be made to this line seven days a week,
24 hours per day. Parents should leave a message
concerning the transportation problem or question.
When leaving a message, it is important that the
following information is provided:
*
Student's Name and ID Number
*
Description of the Problem or
Question
*
Address
*
Telephone Number (Home or Work)
*
School of Attendance
After the
problem has been reviewed, someone
from the school will contact the parents with the
information requested. Usually, this will occur
within 24 hours.
ASSIGNMENT
OF STUDENTS
Under the
provision of School District Policy #2143, each student
who is eligible for transportation service will be
assigned to a bus stop and route that services that
area. Students are not permitted to transfer to other
stops or routes without authorization.
The parent
or guardian may request in writing that a student
be reassigned to a different stop and/or route. Each
request shall be reviewed by the appropriate school
district administrator and a change may be granted
in accordance with the following criteria:
*
The route operates from the student's
assigned school.
*
The route does not have to be changed
or extended.
*
The stop exists on the route.
*
The load on the vehicle will not
exceed the legal load limit for the vehicle.
*
The change does not increase costs
for the school district.
*
The change will be reasonably long-term
except under emergency conditions.
Parents who
have questions concerning this policy should contact
the appropriate building principal.

SCHOOL
BUS STOPPING LAW
Everyday
in Pennsylvania, 1.5 million children are transported
to and from school. These children are transported
more than 320 million miles to school each year.
Every year
children are needlessly injured or killed by drivers
passing stopped school buses in the
United States.
PENNSYLVANIA'S
SCHOOL BUS STOPPING LAW IS VERY CLEAR:
*
When you approach an intersection
where a stopped school bus with red signals flashing
and stop arm extended, YOU MUST STOP.
*
When you meet or overtake a stopped
school bus with the red signal lights flashing
and the stop arm extended, YOU MUST STOP.
*
YOU MUST STOP at least ten (10)
feet away from the school bus.
*
YOU MUST WAIT until the red lights
have stopped flashing and the stop arm has been
withdrawn before moving.
*
DO NOT MOVE your vehicle until
all the children have reached a place of safety.
*
Drivers do not have to stop on
a highway with clearly defined dividing sections
or physical barriers providing separate roadways.
This only applies when the school bus is on the
opposite side of the road. This law applies only
to Curry Hollow Road in the Baldwin-Whitehall
School District.
IF IN DOUBT,
STOP!
If you are
convicted of violating Pennsylvania's School Bus
Stopping Law, you will receive all of the following
penalties:
*
60-Day Driver's License Suspension
*
$250.00 Fine Plus Court Costs
*
Five (5) Points on Your Driving
Record
Over 1,000
motorists in Pennsylvania annually did not obey the
stopping law and received the above
penalties.
Bus
Saftey Monitor System
WTAE television news highlighted the Baldwin-Whitehall
bus safety monitor system that is installed on
each of the district's buses. WTAE anchor Ellen
Gamble reported on this system that safeguards
